Many of us have them and they happen for no real reason. Sportsmen have their little quirks that they believe keep them winning, football players will continuously put their boots on in the same order for a full season, eat the same meal the night before a match and a particular tennis player watched Teletubbies every morning before he played at Wimbledon.
In our own homes we appear to have our own little foyibles, tossing salt over the left shoulder if you spill some, shaking someone’s hand if they have an itchy nose so you don’t fall out (that might just be my Outlaws though), never putting new shoes on a table or just saying ‘White Rabbits, white rabbits, white rabbits’ on the 1st of the month. These particular habits are picked up from our families and have been handed down over the years and tweaked for each new generation.
Generally as a species we are creatures of habit. Humans tend to like routine and order. Not disorder. Most superstitions appear to be there to make our lives easier and to keep order at bay.
Many slimmers have a set of their own superstitions. My own are:
1. Always wear the same clothes.
2. Always eat a protein-based and low-carb meal the night before.
3. Never eat or drink before weigh in.
4. Always visit the little person’s room (every ounce counts!).
What do you do?
