Day 168: Good Times Ahead

on June 16, 2012

Tomorrow is Father’s Day. I’ve always found it rather strange.

As a little ‘un my father wasn’t in the picture. In fact I didn’t see him from the age of 4 until I was 21.

He did get in touch when I was 18. I was full of rage & disgust. I felt as if I had been betrayed in a way as he had a whole new family including 3 step daughters and a daughter with his third wife (my mum was wife number one).

It won’t have helped that we live in different countries, even though it’s only Wales it is still like a foreign country to me – not to mention the accent (when we talk now he takes on a more northern English one so I can understand).

I broke off contact shortly after meeting with him. It was the wrong time and I wasn’t able to handle all the emotions that went with it. Being so far away from home for the first time, I had no one to lean on when it got too much.

Life then intervened. I lost Mum, got married, then had 2 babies, and happened across a relative on MySpace while I wasn’t sleeping (I think Thing 2 was about 9 months old). They passed my news which must have been quite mind blowing.

Now we have been talking for a few years. Have met up in north Wales 2 years ago and it looks like I may be venturing down to south Wales during the school holidays.

The joy of the internet now means I am in contact with relatives I haven’t met since my memories have formed. The joys of parental divorce when you are just months old. You don’t know any different. You also lose half of your family (or at least I did).

However, I’m already getting excited about the trip down and it’s not even definite yet. I am like the prodigal daughter.

Today’s Activities: Icing my niece’s 18th Birthday cakes.

  1. I hope you have a lovely time in South Wales. I can understand your hatred and disgust but you are clearly a corageous and loving person and I am sure all of your family are very proud of you.
