Day 103: An Away Day

on April 12, 2012

Everyone here at BeeBee Towers headed to the coast today.

The gorgeous East Yorkshire coastal town of Bridlington. Usually during the Easter school holidays everything starts to awaken from the seasonal winter slumber.

Today it seemed very down. Not like the busy coastal town I remember. Lots of the biggest shops/eateries/outlets have either shut, not opened yet or are amidst closing down.

It’s really sad. Do we not use these places anymore. Nixy Plonks was an institution, as was Woolys. The bookshop (yes it was a clearance shop, but it was popular) and most surprisingly McDonalds has gone after 23 years in the heart of Brid. It was never empty and great for those early toilet spots and a child-friendly coffee stop.

You can tell that coastal resorts aren’t getting the same numbers of tourists that they used to get. I have no idea why though. They are still good value for money. The 2p machines got hammered today by The Brothers Thing. If it was warmer we’d have spent time on the sands but today was not the day.

We ventured onto the South Promenade for the first time. You can tell that the council mean business. That part of the regeneration by the Spa looks amazing, and the kids where relieved to find their favourite Fireman Sam game – equally disappointed by the ‘Out of Order’ sign slapped on it.

It’s sad to say that next time we go to Bridlington we may not leave South Cliff as the centre no longer hold a lot of interest for us as a family right now, apart from the arcades – which personally I really don’t like.

Plus point though for the kids was finally getting to go on the Land Train back to the newly re-opened Park & Ride.

Here’s to Summer weather making a return, followed closely by evenings and picnics on the beach.

Today’s Activities: Listening to two ladies discussing the goings on in Soap Operas as if it was their real life. Also Thing 1 declaring that it was the best day ever because he was eating a burger in a hotel bistro!
